Learn

Learning should be a lifelong effort. Every experience we receive has a learning opportunity attached to it. We seek to attain knowledge by learning. Knowledge allows us to reach higher levels of success and happiness if we use it wisely. Learning and attaining knowledge can be difficult sometimes. Educators understand that all students learn differently; their objective is not to teach a lesson; their goal is to teach learners.

I believe that the task of learning requires the learner to remember concepts and processes. The ability to memorize concepts can be enhanced by specific methods. For example, if a learner just tries to sit down and memorize something, that is, just put the thing in the memory somewhere, it might be difficult to recall. To prevent something from getting lost in the memory we should try to link it with a related item that is already easily recalled. By doing this a thread of concepts can be woven together and we can find it more easily.

Every individual has different experiences and abilities that affect the learning process. Teachers that adapt to those differences can make the learning process easier and more enjoyable. Although the bulk of the responsibility for learning rests upon the learners, teachers can facilitate the learner’s effort in many ways. First, they can ask questions. Lectures are fine for note taking and test cramming, but questions help to engage the learner and keep them involved. Second, they ask the right questions, being specific so that the learners can focus on a single concept. Third, by not making assumptions about what the right answers should be. Keeping an open mind allows the learners to express their thoughts without judgement. Fourth, they can listen with the same amount of engagement that they expect from their students.

These are not the only things teachers can do to enable learners to learn, but I believe those four modes of teaching are a great way to help secure an effective learning experience. Hopefully, it will become a team effort, with learners, books, notes and teachers all doing their part, but great teachers tend to make the greatest impact on the learners’ efforts. They have in my life. Their object was not to teach lessons; it was to teach learners, and that makes all the difference.
